Fort Myers Beach Shorebird Monitoring
Earth Tech Environmental (ETE) had the opportunity to monitor shorebirds on Fort Myers Beach! ETE biologists monitored shorebirds during construction activity to make sure no chicks or nests were harmed. The biologists monitored the beach 7 days a week from late April to mid May during a beach renourishment. The biologists monitored a Wilson’s Plover (Anarhynchus wilsonia) nest with three chicks during the monitoring event. They observed other shorebirds and wading birds such as a Black-bellied Plovers (Pluvialis squatarola), Ruddy Turnstones (Arenaria interpres), Brown Pelicans (Pelecanus occidentalis), and Great Egret (Ardea alba). By the end of the project, all three chicks and the adult plovers enjoyed the newly restored beach without any threats of ongoing construction.
