Mangrove Channel Clearing

ETE’s Role

We recently conducted the annual maintenance on 5 miles of channels throughout the Clam Bay Estuary. All clearing is done completely by hand! Our specialists remove debris such as fallen logs, mud, and dense dead foliage using rakes, shovels, and saws.

Purpose of Mangrove Channel Clean-Up

Mangroves in the estuary require tidal flushing to provide them with necessary oxygen, salinity, and nutrients. When channels get clogged, this inhibits flushing and can adversely affect mangroves.

Why Mangroves are Important

  • Shoreline stabilization
  • Prevent erosion
  • Storm surge buffer
  • Nursery for commercially viable species
  • Estuaries help filter pollutants and sediments

Mangrove Morphological and Physiological Adaptations

Red Mangroves

Have prop roots that support heavier branches and uptake water for the rest of the tree.

Black Mangroves

Have vertical extending roots surrounding the trunk that aid in oxygen exchange to the rest of the tree.

White Mangroves

Has succulent-like leaves that are able to excrete salt.
